The 36-year-old Scot, who announced days ago his definitive retirement from the circuit after the summer, suffered a tear in the ligament in his foot, in the third set of the match against the Czech Tomas Machac.
The next day, on his social networks, Murray already revealed that he would be out of the competition. “I will see an ankle specialist when I return home to determine next steps. Needless to say, this is difficult to accept and I will be away for an extended period.”
The winner of three Grand Slam titles (two Wimbledon and one US Open), holder of two Olympic golds, will be off the courts for an unspecified period of time, as his team announced this Friday.
“After a consultation between his team and the specialists he visited, Andy Murray decided not to compete in the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 or the Munich Open. For now, it is not clear how long Andy will be out of action and that is why he will continue to evaluate all options with his doctors,” announced his team, which does not rule out the player going through the operating room.
“It is very painful news, especially given his intention to compete as soon as possible.”
The former world number one, who recently warned that his career “will certainly not go beyond this summer”, had the intention of competing at Roland Garros, which he has not played since 2020, and also the Olympic Games. However, he also indicated that he would only attend Paris 2024 if he was “in a position to win a medal.”
The Monte Carlo Masters 1000 begins on April 7 and the Munich tournament a week later. Wimbledon on July 1 and the Olympic Games on the 26th.
