Anita Pointer, founding member of the Pointer Sisters, dies aged 74

Suffering from cancer, Anita Pointer passed away Saturday night at her home in Los Angeles. “Although we are very touched by the loss of Anita, we take comfort in knowing that she is at peace with her daughter Jada and her sisters June and Bonnie,” the family commented.

June died in 2006 and Bonnie in 2020.

The four sisters – Bonnie, Anita, Ruth and June – began singing at their father’s church in Oakland, California, before rising to fame in the 1970s. Their successes include hits such as ‘I’m So Excited” and “Jump (For My Love)”.

The quartet won their first Grammy Awards (musical award) for the song “Fairytale” in 1975. Co-written by Bonnie and Anita, the title won the award for best country duet and was subsequently recorded by Elvis Presley .
