Moscow: The suspect who was in jail in the case of murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was a fierce critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been released.

Sergei Khadshikurbanov, a former detective, was pardoned for being part of the Russian fight in Ukraine. Anna, 48, who became an enemy of the regime through her investigative media work, was killed in a Moscow apartment elevator in 2006. Five accused including Sergey were convicted in the case.

Anna worked for Novaya Gazeta, an independent newspaper in Russia. A book criticizing Putin’s rise to power was released. Although the accused were jailed, it is still not clear who ordered the killing of Anna or for what reason.

Russia is believed to have recruited thousands of prisoners into Ukraine. It is reported that there are serious criminals among them, including the accused in the murder case.
