Annecy Knife Attack: Details of Asylum Application Rejection and Suspect’s Identity Revealed

On Thursday evening, French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin revealed new details regarding the man behind the knife attack that took place in the French town of Annecy.

Darmanin said that France this month rejected an asylum application by the man behind the Onssi attack.

In a statement to TF1, Darmanan explained that the man accused of committing the attack had obtained asylum in Sweden ten years ago, and had submitted asylum requests in Switzerland and Italy as well.

Where did the attack that injured children take place?

In Bansee Park, a quiet town at the foot of the French Alps famous for winter as well as summer sports such as hiking and parasailing, and known as the Pearl of the French Alps.

Le Pacoir is located on the banks of a lake between the city center and the northwest corner of Lake Annecy.

Who are the victims?

The victims are four children, aged between 22 months and three years, and two pensioners, aged 70 and 78.

Police said two young children and a pensioner were in serious condition in hospital.

According to the British Foreign Secretary, one of the children injured in the attack is British, and the public prosecutor who is leading the investigation into the case said that another child has Dutch citizenship.

Who is the suspect?

French authorities say the suspected attacker is a Syrian national with Syrian and Swedish identity papers, including a Swedish driver’s licence.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said the 31-year-old attacker had entered France legally.

Video footage, taken by a witness and verified by Archyde.com, shows a bearded man wearing sunglasses and a blue lacy headdress running through the park holding a knife.

Video footage shows him jumping over a wall in the playground and lunging at a small child on a stroller as a woman tries to stop him.

The police shot the suspect before they overpowered him.

According to the local public prosecutor, he is under investigation for attempted murder.
