Contagious equine metritis, caused by bacteria Taylorella equigenitaliscauses a endometritisthat is to say an infection of the uterus, in 25 to 30% of infected mares. This has the effect of preventing them from carrying a foal. Males are healthy carriers, but can transmit the bacteria during mating or artificial insemination. If the disease is treatable and not fatal, it can cause significant economic losses for horse breeders.

Consolidation of a reference role

The ANSES animal health laboratory, which has been entrusted with this new mandate, joins two other reference laboratories already designated by the OIE on contagious equine metritis, in the United States and the United Kingdom. Within the laboratory, Doctor Sandrine Petry, from the Pathophysiology and Epidemiology of Equine Diseases unit based on the Anses Normandy site, was appointed designated expert. As part of these new missions, the laboratory may be required to analyze samples sent by other countries to confirm suspicions of equine contagious disease. It also has a role in promoting disease diagnosis methods: the bacteriological method, which is the official detection method at the international level, but also PCR (polymerase chain reaction in English), a method of more sensitive and faster detection.

This international reference activity is in addition to the national and European mandates that this ANSES laboratory already holds on contagious equine metritis: it has in fact been a national reference laboratory for this disease since 1992 and a European Union reference laboratory. on all equine diseases, except African horse sickness, since 2008. This is the twenty-sixth reference mandate from ANSES for the OIE, one of which concerns another equine disease, dourine, for which the Agency was designated in June 2020.

Research on the genome of the bacteria

On the research side, the laboratory’s work on genome of Taylorella equigenitalis are internationally recognized: the team sequenced the first genomes of this bacterium and a close species, Taylorella asinigenitalis. She is also the curator of the content of the international MLST (multilocus sequence typing) database which lists the genotypes of the different clones of Taylorella equigenitalis identified throughout the world: the team is in charge of verifying the data transmitted by users of this database and feeding it with the verified data. “ There are several strains within this bacterial species. Monitoring their circulation globally allows for better control of the disease and knowledge of situations at risk of exposure. », explains Sandrine Petry.
