ANSM Update on RABIPUR Vaccine Supply Tensions: What You Need to Know

2023-12-14 13:37:00

The National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) has released the December 13 information from the Valneva France laboratory indicating supply tensions for the RABIPUR vaccine, an (inactivated) rabies vaccine – [virus de la rage inactivé, souche Flury LEP] indicated for active immunization against rabies in people of all ages.

  • Temporary suspension of the delivery of RABIPUR to wholesalers-distributors with the constitution of an emergency stock for pharmacies;
  • Quantitative quota at hospitals and health establishments offering travel vaccination;
  • Troubleshooting can only be carried out at community pharmacies with a maximum of 3 doses per patient (corresponding to a complete vaccination schedule) in the following indications:
    • people exercising a risky profession (such as laboratory personnel handling equipment contaminated or likely to be contaminated by rabies or related viruses, veterinarians);
    • people whose professional or personal activities may bring them into direct contact with bats or other mammals likely to be infected with rabies (such as zoonotic disease control personnel, forest rangers, knackers , pound staff, naturalists, taxidermists, game wardens or slaughterhouse staff);
    • in situations where the existing therapeutic alternative cannot be provided;
  • A safety stock has been established for rabies centers to ensure the availability of RABIPUR® for post-exposure rabies prophylaxis. As a reminder, post-exposure rabies vaccination can only be carried out in approved rabies centers.

A therapeutic alternative is available, the RABIPUR vaccine and the RABIQUE PASTEUR VACCINE being interchangeable.

In order to secure the situation in France as much as possible and to preserve available stocks, the sale and export of the medicine by wholesale distributors abroad is prohibited from the publication of this information sheet on our site ( application of public health law 2016-41 published in the Official Journal on January 27, 2016 and the provisions of articles L. 5121-30 and L.5124-17-3 of the Public Health Code). This measure prohibiting sales outside the national territory, or to wholesale distributors for export, must be applied and respected until the medicine is made available normally, allowing a continuous and appropriate supply to the national market.
