Career: High school and college football in home state of Florida

Anthony Richardson played football at Eastside High School just 15 minutes from Ben Hill Griffin Stadium for the Florida Gators, his later collegiate team. His huge talent and athletic ability quickly showed on the pitch.

The Florida Gators quarterback coach scouted him personally with head coach Dan Mullen. As the first major college program, the Gators presented him with an athletic scholarship. Richardson continued to receive offers from several top teams such as Georgia and Michigan as he continued his recruiting process, but decided to stay in his home state and play college football “on his doorstep”.

After getting snaps as a starting quarterback in his second season and taking his talent to the next level, he became the Gators’ undisputed starter in his third year. In the season-opener game against the Utah Utes on September 3, 2022, Richardson led his team to victory with a spectacular performance and raised the prospect of being a big pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Although he could have continued to play college football, after the season he decided to pursue a professional career and entered the 2023 NFL Draft.

Richardson is one of the polarizing talents in the upcoming NFL draft. Despite his inconsistent performances in college, his high potential as a dual threat quarterback, athleticism and arm strength make him a possible first overall pick.

Anthony Richardson: Fortune

Through multiple endorsement deals with companies like Gatorade and Fanatics, Richardson has already built up a small fortune off the field, estimated to be in the high six figures. However, nothing is known about his exact income from his deals.

Should Richardson be picked first in the 2023 NFL Draft, the quarterback has a fully guaranteed $40 million contract awaiting him. The quarterback talent’s financial prospects therefore look more than rosy.

From Combine Monster to Quarterback Legend in the NFL?

Anthony Richardson set a quarterback record in two disciplines at the NFL Combine. He hit 40.5 inches on the vertical jump and 10.5 inches on the standing long jump — both combine numbers never matched by any other quarterback. His 40-yard dash of 4.44 seconds combined with his height and weight also attracted attention. Only seven quarterbacks were faster in the combine in historical comparison. However, Richardson became the first quarterback to clock a time under 4.5 seconds at a weight of more than 250 pounds.

In interviews at the NFL Combine, the quarterback talent said: “I want to be a legend. I want to be like Patrick Mahomes. I want to be like Tom Brady. I want to be one of the greats. I’m going to be one of the greats because I’m willing to work so hard and get to this point. I have the feeling that I will be one of the greats in the next few years.”

Controversy surrounding Richardson’s AR-15 nickname

Earlier in his college career, Anthony Richardson was nicknamed “AR-15” because of his Gators jersey number 15 and the initials in his name. However, prior to his final collegiate season, he announced that he no longer wished to be called “AR-15.” The background was the recent rampages in the USA in the summer of 2022, in which the assault rifle of the same name (“AR-15”) was also used.

The quarterback then announced, “Even though a nickname is just a nickname and ‘AR-15’ was just a combination of my initials and jersey number, it’s important to me that my name and branding are no longer associated with the assault rifle used in rampages.”

Personal Life of Anthony Richardson: Family, Girlfriend and Netflix Documentary

Born in Miami, Richardson moved with his family to Gainesville, Florida in 2013 where he attended Eastside High School and attended basketball alongside football.

His final high school season was documented for the yet to be released fourth season of the series QB 1: Beyond The Lights. When “AR” fans can look forward to the release is still unknown.

Not much is known about his private life. He was raised by his mother, LaShawnda Lane. In addition, his uncle Tanka Lane played an important role in his upbringing. He only has sporadic contact with his father. Richardson has a special relationship with his little brother. Speaking in a media session at the NFL Combine, he said, “I had to raise my younger brother while my mother worked two or three jobs a year. If you ask the folks in Gainesville, I had a little black mountain bike, and whenever you saw me on it, you saw my little brother on the handlebars. I had to take him to school. I had to get him food. I had to wear it to school. He’s my brother, but I love him like he’s my son. I’m just glad he’s a part of my life and I love him and can’t wait for us both to achieve our dreams.”

It is not known whether Anthony Richardson has a girlfriend. The football talent is rumored to be single. However, this information is not secured.

How old is Richardson?

Most websites state that Richardson is already 21 years old and was born on May 22, 2001. However, at the NFL Combine, he stated that he is only 20 years old and was born on May 22, 2002. His young age, combined with his high development potential, makes him one of the most sought-after talents in the NFL Draft.
