Anti-diabetes drugs for weight loss: the dangerous new trend on TikTok

On TikTokInternet users have been suggesting for several months to their community to inject themselves with Ozempic and Trulicity, two drugs prescribed in the treatment of diabetes type 2, in order to lose weight quickly. However, as indicated in particular BFM TV this practice is very risky.

Health risks

The Vidal medical dictionary effectively explains that in addition to the weight loss linked to their appetite suppressant effect, these two drugs have other undesirable effects of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea for Trulicity and intestinal disorders, dizziness, acceleration heart rate and damage to the pancreas for Ozempic.

And, to lose even more weight, some would increase the doses of these drugs, which multiplies the undesirable effects. In such cases, “The health risks are great” explained Cédric Moro, research director at Inserm. According to TF1 Info , Novo Nordisk, the company that markets Ozempic, is preparing to market Wegovy, a similar product intended solely for weight loss. In France, however, this drug should be reserved for obese patients treated in hospital.

Shortages

The promotion of these two drugs on social networks has also caused shortages in some countries. This is particularly the case in the United States or Australia, where Ozempic should remain unavailable until April 2023.

Jean-François Thébau, vice-president of the French Federation of Diabetics, has thus expressed concern to our colleagues that such a situation is occurring in France, especially since some pharmacies are already experiencing supply difficulties on these drugs. .

However, according to the agency, “there is no particular peak or sudden increase in consumption in France […] may suggest use […] for weight loss ». As a precaution, reinforced monitoring has nevertheless been put in place.
