Anti-Kremlin militias: Still active in Russia

Three anti-Kremlin militias with Ukrainian support are claiming new attacks on targets in Russia following last week’s advances. “The operation continues at this moment,” said Denis Kapustin, head of the Russian Volunteer Corps, to the press in Kiev on Thursday. “We will discuss our losses after the operation is complete.” The other two groups were the Russian Freedom Legion and the Siberia Battalion.

According to their own statements, their fighters entered villages in the Russian regions of Kursk and Belgorod from northern Ukraine last week. The Reuters news agency was unable to verify the information.

The groups say they consist of Russians who reject President Vladimir Putin’s government. According to this, they receive intelligence information, ammunition and logistical help from Ukraine, but they act independently of the government in Kiev. The most recent attacks were preceded by advances in the border area in May 2023. Russian authorities have spoken vaguely of “Ukrainian terrorists” in connection with the operations. In previous communications, the groups were described as puppets of the Ukrainian military and the US intelligence agency CIA.
