Antwerp Mayor Imposes House Arrest on 31 Youth: Measures for New Year’s Eve

2023-12-29 11:15:11

For the second year in a row, Bart De Wever, the mayor of Antwerp, has taken severe measures to prevent any excesses on New Year’s Eve. 31 young people aged 13 to 22 will be placed under house arrest from December 31, 5 p.m. to December 1. January 8 a.m.

Bart De Wever justifies this decision: “These people represent a risk to public order.” These young people are, in fact, known to the police. Most of them have had contact with the police dozens of times over the past year. Whether for acts of vandalism, arson or even fights. Some of them are also known for attacks, particularly against the police and emergency services, but also for possession of weapons.

During New Year’s Eve, the police will ensure compliance with this measure. Young people who still decide to spend the night outside risk administrative arrest and a fine of €350.

Last year, 27 young people aged 13 to 30 were forced to stay at home during New Year’s Eve. The house arrest was respected by 70% of them.
