A chase ended in an accident on Sunday morning in Antwerp, local police said. The driver, aged 35, tried to escape a check. He was drunk.
The passenger in the vehicle, a 37-year-old woman, was taken to hospital. His vital prognosis is in jeopardy. The police chased the driver following he avoided a check. The man fled the scene at high speed and committed several serious traffic violations.
Stuck following hitting a traffic light near Koning Albert Park, the driver deliberately rear-ended the police vehicle in order to be able to resume his escape, explained the Antwerp police.
A little further on, his car skidded on the wet road. The driver lost control and crashed into a lamp post. The man was arrested and subjected to an alcohol and drug test which came back positive.
“The passenger may not have been wearing her seat belt at the time of the impact and suffered very serious injuries. The emergency services took care of her and then transferred her unconscious to hospital. Her life-threatening condition is in jeopardy “, specified the Antwerp police.
