Antwerp police intercepted a van in which seven heavily armed men were on Tuesday evening on the IJzerlaan, they confirmed after Gazet van Antwerpen published the information. The investigation will have to determine what the group was planning and the possible links with a large seizure of cocaine which took place earlier in the day in the port of Antwerp.
“I can confirm that our arrest unit carried out a high-risk action yesterday evening with the support of dispatching, the Realtime intelligence center (RTIC), emergency aid and a unit from the High risk protection, among others,” declared Antwerp police spokesperson Wouter Bruyns, who did not wish to comment further on the facts. The prosecutor’s office was also unable to immediately provide further information.

On Tuesday during the day, a seizure of “several tons” of cocaine was made in the port of Antwerp. The drug was hidden in a shipment of soy flour, according to the FPS Finances. The investigation into the armed men believes that they wanted to try to recover the cargo.
