Among the measures recently decided to reduce the pressure on prisons, which are grossly overcrowded, the minister recalled the extended prison leave (one month out of two) which applies to certain prisoners. The measure came into force a week ago. “This Monday, March 11, 167 inmates were placed under this form of prison surveillance,” specifies the minister.

A very meager gain in space compared to the scale of overpopulation, the opposition was quick to point out. The minister did not give up, however. “I am the first to admit that despite the places created (1,200 since the start of this legislature, he assures), overpopulation is still far too high (…) But I don’t have a magic wand” .
