Antwerp’s Debt-Free Future: From 1980s Crisis to Financial Independence

The City of Antwerp put an end to its mountain of debt inherited from the 1980s on Wednesday, which led it to be placed under the supervision of the Flemish government. Its mayor Bart De Wever (N-VA) symbolically handed over the last euro to creditor Belfius, successor to Crédit Communal.

In 1988, Antwerp was still drowning in debt equivalent to 1.68 billion euros. The decline was started by the socialist mayor Patrick Janssens and continued by the nationalist Bart De Wever. The metropolis was able to free itself from regional supervision in 2018. Other debts have since been contracted by the City, but these are loans intended to cover investments and no longer to pay current expenses such as salaries.
