O Apollopopular third-party client for Redditwill close its activities on June 30 due to the controversial network decision to charge for access to your APIApplication programming interfaceor application programming interface.”>1.

Christian Seligthe sole developer behind the app, announced the shutdown on Twitter, citing recent Reddit actions as the reason for discontinuing the app.

Apollo will close on June 30th. Recent Reddit decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so, so much, for all your support over the years. ❤️

Last week, Selig expressed concerns about the financial implications of Reddit’s new API rules, estimating a cost of $20 million per year to keep your application under the new regulations, which are expected to take effect in 19/6.

I just ended a call with Reddit about the API and new pricing. Bad news unless I come up with $20 million (no kidding). I appreciate any support.

Selig expressed his frustration with this scenario, emphasizing that he no longer believed that the situation could be resolved. He further stated that he is unlikely to sell the Apollo, which currently has about 50 thousand subscribers paying on average US$10 per annum.

Apollo, launched in 2017, won over users with unique features like customizable gestures, media viewer, and others inspired by feedback from Reddit users. Over the years, the platform has gained recognition for its customization and advanced features, in addition to being designed especially for iOS.

Ironically, Apollo was mentioned several times during the WWDC23this week, including Craig Federighi (Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering), and was featured as one of the apps compatible with the Apple Vision Pro.

Other third-party apps are also experiencing difficulties due to these changes implemented by Reddit. The developer of ReddPlanetfor example, also announced which will shut down its app by the end of this month.

So far, Reddit has yet to comment on the situation, but has promised to provide more information in the coming days.
