App Store (iOS) has 101 million monthly users in Europe

Apple today released the total number of users of its main platforms to meet a requirement of the Digital Services Law (Digital Services Actor DSA) — legislation proposed by the European Union to protect consumer data and which already has a date to start to be valid. The document was first noticed by the iGeneration.

As explained by Apple itself, the DSA targets “very large online platforms” (VLOP, its acronym in English) — that is, that have an average equal to or greater than 45 million monthly active users. Of all the company’s services, only one exceeds this number: the iOS App Store, with its 101 million monthly users.

Even so, Apple said it will also voluntarily include other services of its own in this accountability. According to the company, the idea is to “align each of the existing versions of the App Store with the requirements of the DSA”, as it shares the same goals as the DSA “to protect consumers from illegal content”.

As the company considers each version of the App Store to be a separate service, it has also released numbers for iPadOS (23 million), to macOS (6 million), to tvOS (1 million) and watchOS (less than 1 million). In addition to the app store, Apple included the average number of active Books users (Books) (less than 1 million) and Apple Podcasts subscriptions (less than 1 million).

The legislation, it is worth remembering, aims to limit the data of users that Big Techs can use to carry out commercial activities, with special attention to children. Platforms are also required to monitor user content to weed out false information and hate speech.

According to Apple, all this data concerns a period of six months, which ended on January 31 of this year.
