App Store: Revenue from small developers grew 71% between 2020 and 2022

A Apple just released an independent study that shows how App Store has helped small developers growing considerably in recent years. Led by economists from Analysis Groupthe data shows that small entrepreneurs saw their revenue from the app store grow impressively 71% from 2020 to here.

According to the company, enter into this account developers who moved an amount equal to or less than US$ 1 million per year and that totaled less than 1 million annual downloads — that is, 90% of all developers gifts in the App Store. In addition, the company also highlighted that 80% of these developers operate in several regions, with 40% of their downloads coming from users outside their countries of origin.

Most of these developers have even grown rapidly in recent years and are no longer considered “small” by the App Store. According to the survey, 40% of entrepreneurs who had revenues greater than US$1 million a year had moved only US$10,000 or were not even on the platform five years ago.

Furthermore, the App Store continues to welcome thousands of new developers from a variety of countries and regions every year. According to the data, in the last year alone, 25% they came from European countries; 23% da China; 14% from USA and 4% from Japan. Developers from South Korea, India and Brazil represented 35% of all additions.

The publication of this study coincides with the news that the government of Italy will investigate Apple over the App Tracking Transparency (App Tracking Transparency, or ATT). The suspicion of the European country’s antitrust body is that, by limiting data collection, it may force competitors out of the App Store, which would be favoring Apple’s own apps.

At the beginning of the year, it is worth remembering, Apple’s vice president of services, Eddy Cue, published a letter in which he highlighted the performance of several services from the Cupertino giant, including the App Store. At the time, the executive explained that the store had already paid $320 billion for developers since it was released in 2008.
