Apple announced on Monday that it now plans to use 100% recycled cobalt in all batteries in its devices by 2025.
The American technology giant, which has set itself the goal of achieving carbon neutrality for all its products by 2030, is counting in particular on relying on Daisy, an iPhone disassembly robot.
This system separates smartphone batteries from their other components and allows specialized recycling teams to recover cobalt and other materials, including lithium.
Under this new accelerated deadline, all magnets in Apple devices will be made entirely of recycled rare-earth elements and all of the brand’s circuit boards will feature 100% recycled tin solders and 100% recycled gold plating.
The Californian group explains that it considerably increased its use of recycled essential metals last year, bringing it to more than two-thirds for aluminum.
At the same time, nearly three quarters of the rare earths and more than 95% of the tungsten composing its products come from 100% recycled resources.
