Apple acquired Datakalab, a French artificial intelligence startup known for its work in the artificial intelligence segment. Apparently, the deal took place in December, but was only discovered now.

According to iPhoneSoft, the European Commission recognized Apple’s acquisition of Datakalab. The details of the deal have not yet been revealed, but the Cupertino giant’s decision must be related to rumors about artificial intelligence in the next iPhones.

Datakalab was founded in 2016 by Xavier and Lucas Fischer, with a main focus on making artificial intelligence work properly without needing cloud services. This proposal is in line with Apple’s decision to offer local processing for greater privacy, security and performance.

Over the years, the French company has specialized in compressing AI algorithms so that they work correctly on cell phones and tablets, which attracted Apple’s attention. Recently, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman said that iOS 18 will bring several artificial intelligence features.

With technology giants increasingly interested in AI, Apple will not be left out of the trend. In fact, Datakalab is just another startup that the company acquired. According to data from Statista, the Cupertino giant would have purchased 32 companies in the segment, while Google would have obtained 21.

Previously, Gurman also mentioned that Apple and Google are negotiating to license the Gemini generative AI model in the iPhone 16 line. There are also rumors that the Cupertino giant is talking to OpenAI.
