On the section of its website dedicated to developers, Apple yesterday published a sensational announcement: applications will cost more from February 13, in several areas of the globe.
Apple adapts to local taxes
Here is the list of countries that will experience an increase in app prices and in-app purchases within two weeks:
- Colombia
- Egypt
- Hungary
- Nigeria
- Norway
- South Africa
- UK
For the following countries, the increase will be effective early, before February:
- Cambodia
- Kyrgyzstan
- Indonesia
- Singapore
- South Korea
- Tajikistan
- Thailand
- Uzbekistan
In some countries, such as Ireland or Luxembourg, prices will also vary, but downwards, following a change in local taxation on products available on the App Store.
The App Store has seen various pricing changes in the past, sometimes up, sometimes down. With these fluctuations, Apple seeks to best adapt to changes in laws and taxes that sometimes take place in certain countries, but also to variations in the value of different currencies around the world.
And France?
You will have noticed, France is not listed here and so not concerned by this increase on 13 February next. However, this might be seen as a first clue for a future increase, which Apple would apply later in the year. Moreover, and this has been announced last year, next spring, developers will benefit from new tools for pricing their applications, as well as a new grid, notably including new price levels. All this with the idea of helping creators to position themselves as well as possible on an always critical question for the potential buyer: “is this application worth its price?”
