Apple announces Swift Student Challenge 2024 event details

A Apple officially announced this Wednesday (8) the details of the next edition of the Swift Student Challenge event, which will take place in February 2024 with 350 selected and will have a new category, called Distinguished Winners.

According to Maçã, the new category was created to highlight the 50 most interesting projects sent to the company and the winners will be invited to a visit to Apple’s headquarters in the city of Cupertino, California, in the United States.


The visit is scheduled for next summer in the northern hemisphere (between June and September) and the winners will be able to talk to Maçã engineers. All winners will also receive a one-year subscription to the Apple Developer Program.

On initiative Programming for Everyone also received news. Now, students will be able to participate in four new projects, designed to encourage them in their first steps into the SwiftUI universe and improve their skills.

The four new projects available include:

Create a simple app: Students can create an app prototype in Keynote to learn the basics of app design, practice rapid prototyping, and gather feedback, following the same steps as professional developers.
Create with stacks and shapes: Students can take their first steps in developing an app in Swift Playgrounds and program a selfie or artwork using SwiftUI to learn the basics of user interface design.
Create custom shapes: Students can take their app interfaces to the next level by designing a shape, learning how to plot coordinates, and programming custom shapes with SwiftUI and the About Me sample app in Swift Playgrounds.
Draw an app icon: Students can learn and apply app design principles to create a unique and recognizable app icon that conveys an idea, practice rapid prototyping, collect feedback, and upload the icon to Swift Playgrounds to include it in an app.

The four projects are in Apple Education Community. There, educators can still find materials for skill levels. Swift Playgrounds 4.4 is also now available and supports Swift 5.9 and SDKs for iPadOS 17 and macOS Sonoma 14.

Everyone interested in participating in the Swift Student Challenge 2024 will have three weeks in February 2024 to present their projects. Registration can be done on the page developer.apple.com. Updates on next steps will also be posted there.

It is worth mentioning that the Swift Student Challenge is an event created for student developers who are cultivating their software development skills. To participate, you must be 13 years of age or older in the US, or the equivalent minimum age in the relevant jurisdiction.
