Apple assembles its new iPhones in a Latin American country

Brazilians who buy an iPhone can now be assured that it was made in their country. An Apple tactic intended to free it from China, but also to avoid Brazilian taxes.

For years, Apple has sought to free itself from Asia, and particularly China, for the assembly of its products. To do this, according to the Brazilian media MacMagazine, Apple has reportedly started manufacturing its iPhone 15s in Brazil. When purchasing an iPhone from the Brazilian Apple Store, model numbers end with BR/A, meaning they are manufactured in the country.

On the one hand, supply problems and delays linked to the pandemic have cooled Apple towards Asia. For months, after successive confinements in China, Apple lived in doubt, not knowing whether the iPhones could be shipped on time. To avoid experiencing this type of situation again, Apple signs contracts with subcontractors in several emerging countries. If there are problems in Brazil, the company can then fall back on India or Vietnam, other countries where Apple has manufacturing lines.

On the other hand, the reason for this relocation to Brazil would be financial. The Brazilian government imposes significant taxes on all imported products, Apple ensures that iPhones sold in the American country are produced there, and therefore bypass these taxes. With such practices, President Lula’s government ensures that production chains remain in Brazil (or are created there) for job creation.

Who knows ? Perhaps the iPhones we will buy in the coming months in Belgium or France will no longer come from Asia but rather from Brazil.
