Apple is making it available to iPhone users via the beta version of iOS 17.4 Create a virtual card number The Apple Cash card can be used for shopping when online Apple Pay isn’t an option.

Apple Cash is Apple’s prepaid debit card that users were able to use exclusively with Apple Pay, with a card number never available.

Money on your Apple Cash Card can also be sent to friends and family, transferred to a bank, or used across your Apple Card balance.

A new pop-up message in the wallet app says: “You can set up a virtual card number to keep your card information safe with a new security code for each transaction. “You can easily access the card number in the Autofill feature in Safari and use it to shop online in places where Apple Pay is not available.”

Apple is offering Apple Cash customers a new way in iOS 17.4 beta to spend the balance even if Apple Pay is not available.

With the virtual card number, iPhone users can pay with Apple Cash even if Apple Pay is not available, removing a major limitation on Apple’s built-in Venmo-like service.

The option appears in the iOS 17.4 beta, although the company may not provide it to all beta users.

It’s easy to check if you’ve accessed the option by opening the Wallet app, tapping your Apple Cash card, and looking for a message at the bottom of your balance inviting you to set up a virtual card number.

After you create the number, you can click on the three-dot menu at the top right to view the card information you recently set up, which includes the expiration date and three-digit security code.

Apple Cash still appears to use a separate card number for Apple Pay transactions, and Apple now provides another detailed menu compared to the Card Number Information screen when you tap Additional Card Numbers after setting up the feature.

This change is beneficial for Apple Cash users because there are still a lot of places where it is not supported, even though Apple Pay is widely adopted.

Users can now automatically fill in their Apple Cash card number instead of having to deal with transferring funds to their bank, which incurs a small fee when users choose the instant transfer option instead of the free, 3-business-day alternative.
