Apple Intelligence took center stage during an autumn keynote at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park, marked by John Ternus’s first major product event as CEO following Tim Cook’s transition to executive chairman after 15 years running the company. The showcase introduced the A20 Pro-powered iPhone 18 Pro lineup alongside Apple’s first foldable device, the iPhone Duo.
Hardware Architecture of the A20 Pro and On-Device Processing
Apple is pushing local compute capabilities harder than ever. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max run on the new A20 Pro chip, fabricated on a 2-nanometer process. According to reports from the event, the silicon packs a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine designed to double the AI processing power of the previous generation A19 Pro.

Memory bandwidth and graphics performance have both seen substantial upward revisions. This architectural shift addresses a major engineering bottleneck: handling computationally demanding generative AI tasks locally on the device rather than offloading every query to remote data centers. Thermal management has also been overhauled. Apple integrated an improved vapor chamber into the chassis to help the A20 Pro sustain peak performance under heavy workloads without running into severe thermal throttling.
Battery performance scales alongside these silicon gains. The iPhone 18 Pro Max delivers up to 45 hours of video playback when configured for eSIM only, representing the largest battery life leap in iPhone history. Meanwhile, the new C2 cellular modem handles wireless data transfers while consuming 15 percent less power than its predecessor.
Entering the Foldable Market With the iPhone Duo
After years of supply chain chatter and dummy units, Apple officially entered the foldable market with the iPhone Duo. Unveiled by Ternus as Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the book-style device measures roughly the size of a passport when folded. It features a 5.4-inch outer display that offers 90 percent of the screen area found on the standard iPhone 18 Pro.
When unfolded, the Duo reveals a 7.6-inch inner display. Both screens share a matching aspect ratio to ensure seamless content scaling across panels. Apple incorporated a nano-texture finish onto the glass to cut glare and minimize the visibility of the fold crease, setting up a direct challenge to established foldables from competitors like Samsung and Google.
The device arrives as foldable smartphones struggle to capture mass market share, accounting for just 1.6 percent of global smartphone sales in 2025 according to market figures cited by The Verge.
Pro Camera Controls and Digital Provenance
The standard flagship lineup also received significant camera overhauls. The iPhone 18 Pro introduces a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera equipped with a variable aperture—a first for the iPhone line. Six laser-cut blades automatically adjust across four distinct aperture settings to manage depth of field and exposure in dynamic lighting conditions.
Photographers gain granular control via a new “Pro controls” interface, which permits manual adjustments of shutter speed, aperture, and white balance alongside an onscreen histogram. An open API allows third-party developers to tap directly into the variable aperture range.
To combat the verification challenges brought on by generative AI, Apple introduced the Apple Reference Image feature. Utilizing Private Cloud Compute, the system captures signed sensor data to generate an unalterable cryptographic reference file alongside the edited photo. This digital negative lets viewers verify what was actually present in the original capture versus later software modifications.
Ecosystem Expansion and Pricing Adjustments
Apple Intelligence is threading deeper across the entire hardware ecosystem, encompassing the newly unveiled Apple Watch Series 12 and AirPods 5 alongside iOS 27 updates for Siri, Safari, Messages, Photos, and Shortcuts. However, these capabilities come with a financial adjustment.
Both the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max carry a $100 price increase over previous generations, starting at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively. Pre-orders open on September 12, with official retail availability kicking off on September 18.
