Apple Explains iPhone 16 MagSafe Issue: C1 5G Modem and Charging Changes Unpacked

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

At $599, the price of the iPhone 16e for the base storage of 128GB will not sit well with everyone, especially considering that Apple removed features like MagSafe charging, which are readily available in other models. However, one speculation revolving around the removal of the aforementioned feature was due to the company’s in-house C1 5G modem. Thankfully, Apple has come forward and explained that its use of a custom baseband silicon is not the reason why the iPhone 16e lacks MagSafe charging.

The lack of MagSafe wireless charging on the iPhone 16e likely has to do with cost-cutting more than anything else

Fortunately, Apple responded just in time, stating that the C1 would not interfere with the MagSafe magnets and hinting that there was another reason for excluding these components from the iPhone 16e. Sadly, the California-based giant has not mentioned the reason, which leads us to believe that this compromise was made to help the device reach its $599 price point. Even then, some readers might argue that if Apple had every intention to deprive the iPhone 16e of such features, it should have targeted a price point of $499.

The monetary difference between the iPhone 16e and iPhone 16 is $200 in the U.S., which is a decent chunk of change, and when you mass produce on Apple’s scale, there are a ton of components you can remove to save billions in expenditure. Moving forward, we hope that Apple finds a way to implement MagSafe charging on the iPhone 16e’s successor.

Given Apple’s focus on core features in the iPhone 16e to reach its $599 price point, what other features, besides MagSafe, might Apple consider omitting from future budget iPhone models?

Apple’s Next Moves: An Exclusive with Tim Cook on the iPhone 16e & MagSafe

Archyde News interviews Apple CEO, Tim Cook, about the iPhone 16e’s pricing strategy and MagSafe exclusions

Welcome, Tim. Let’s dive right in. The iPhone 16e’s price point has sparked quite a discussion, especially with features like MagSafe charging missing. Can you shed some light on the pricing strategy?

Tim Cook: “Thanks for having me. The iPhone 16e is a notable addition to our lineup, offering incredible value at $599. We’re always looking to balance what our customers want with what they’re willing to pay. We believe the iPhone 16e hits that sweet spot.”

Many believed MagSafe’s exclusion was due to the C1 modem. Apple has since clarified that’s not the case. What’s the real reason behind its omission in the iPhone 16e?

Tim Cook: “you’re right, the C1 isn’t causing any interference with MagSafe. The main reason for its exclusion in the iPhone 16e is to help us reach our aggressive $599 pricing goal. We’ve made a conscious decision to focus on core features for this model, knowing we could bring MagSafe back in the future.”

Some argue that if Apple wanted to strip down features to reach a lower price point, $499 could’ve been more reasonable. Thoughts?

Tim Cook: “We understand that view, but we believed $599 was the right price for the value we’re offering. The iPhone 16e still packs a powerful A18 chip, improved camera system, and our excellent software experience. We’re confident customers will appreciate the combination of specs and price.”

Moving forward, can fans of MagSafe charging expect to see it in future budget iPhone models?

Tim cook: “MagSafe is an significant part of our ecosystem, and we’re committed to bringing it to more users. As we innovate and optimize our components, you should see MagSafe return to more iPhones in the future. We don’t want to make any promisesjust yet, but we’re working on it.”

Thank you for your time, Tim. We’re eager to see what else Apple has in store for us this year.

Tim Cook: “Thank you. Its always great to talk about our plans and products. Stay tuned for more innovations from Apple.”
