Apple’s major annual software refresh is fast approaching. According to Mashable, Apple is set to launch iOS 27 in mid-September, with a likely release date of September 16—roughly a week after the company’s September 9 iPhone event. Testing for the new operating system is already well advanced through developer and public beta channels.
Testers are currently using Developer Beta 7 and Public Beta 5. Because the testing cycle is so late in the game, Mashable reports that no major new features are expected when the software launches properly next month, though minor surprises remain possible under the event’s tagline, Surprise and shine.
Device Compatibility and Installation Process for iOS 27
Users wondering whether their current hardware will support the upcoming operating system will find a broad range of compatible devices. Mashable notes that iOS 27 will be available for the iPhone 11 and later, as well as the iPhone SE starting from the 2nd generation and later. Furthermore, upcoming hardware—reportedly including the iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Ultra—will run the new software straight out of the box.
For owners of compatible devices, installing the update will consist merely of going to your iPhone’s Settings, General, Software Update, and choosing to install the new OS,
according to Mashable. The process is expected to take roughly 10 minutes, depending on individual internet connections. Although final major software releases from Apple tend to be fairly polished, experts recommend backing up devices prior to installation.
Siri AI and Apple Intelligence Capabilities
The crown jewel of the iOS 27 release is the introduction of improved Siri, now officially designated as Siri AI. Working alongside Apple Intelligence, these tools permeate built-in applications to simplify everyday tasks. In the United States, users can activate Siri AI by using the Hey Siri
voice command, pressing and holding the side button, or swiping down from the Dynamic Island.

This capability can assist with tasks such as splitting restaurant bills, checking business hours, or identifying plants and animals. Accessing the feature requires clicking and holding the Camera Control button, or using the Control Center, Action button, or Lock Screen on unsupported hardware.
However, not all users will experience the new artificial intelligence tools immediately. Mashable highlights a major regional caveat: Some of the AI features aren’t available in the EU due to Apple’s dispute over AI with European regulators.
This restriction applies directly to Visual Intelligence and certain AI capabilities at launch, with no publicly announced timeline for a resolution.
