Apple may implement less powerful A17 chip in “iPhones 16”

Unlike what was done in the last two generations of iPhonesApple will be able to design a processor specifically for upcoming entry/mid-range models, according to information published on Weibo.

Since the iPhones 14, it is worth noting, Apple started using the chip from the previous generation’s top-of-the-line models in the cheapest versions, featuring a SoCSystem on a chipor system on a chip.”>1 new only for the most expensive devices. As seen by MacRumorshowever, a theoretically reliable source expects that, from the “iPhones 16”even the construction of these chips is different.

In this sense, while the A17 Pro chip in the iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max is manufactured using TSMC’s N3B process, Apple will be able to migrate to the process N3E — low cost — for the A17 chip that will power the ‌”iPhones 16‌/16‌ Plus”. This possibility had already been mentioned by analyst Jeff Pu on the eve of the announcement of the iPhones 15, as also informed by MacRumors.

More precisely, the N3B process represents TSMC’s original 3-nanometer node — created in partnership with Apple. The N3E, on the other hand, is the simplest node that most other TSMC customers will use. It has a lower transistor density compared to N3B, resulting in lower efficiency.

As we said, the source of the information would have a certain positive reputation, as the same user was the first to say that the iPhones 14‌/14 Plus would maintain the A15 Bionic chip, with the A16 Bionic exclusively equipping the iPhones 14‌ Pro/14 Pro Max .

The very fact that Apple used a “Pro” suffix on the chip of the iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max is, of course, a strong indication that it will not be this same chip that will equip the future “iPhones 16/16 Plus”.
