Apple releases iOS update to fix HomeKit service bug

On August 10, 2021, a bug was reported on iOS version 15.2. This bug occurs when a device is connected to a HomeKit with a very long name. Devices connected to it are then subject to endless freezing and rebooting. Apple would have tried to solve the problem before the beginning of the year 2022, but without success.

A few days ago, Apple finally released an update that is admittedly minimal, but it still solves the problems that occurred before. In addition to providing a security fix for iOS devices, the update provides a fix for “CarPlay” applications and another for an issue that prevented the message application from uploading photos to the cloud.

Renaming the Homekit causes a bug on iOS devices

As a reminder, HomeKit is a software that allows you to control the connected devices of a smart home from your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or Mac. One of the problems with using the software would be that if the name given to the HomeKit had too long a character, the iOS devices that connect to it, risk crashing or becoming unusable.

The bug caused by HomeKit leads to several problems. At first, iOS will start to stop working. Subsequently, all attempts to connect the device via USB will be unsuccessful because the device ignores all communication attempts. In a second step, the device will restart indefinitely without solving the problem and finally, the user will end up losing all his local data.

The solutions provided by version 15.2.1 of iOS

iOS version 15.2.1 fixes the vulnerability in devices that are connected to HomeKit. It proposes to limit the size of characters for the renaming of HomeKit devices. This update also fixes a bug that affected the operation of CarPlay applications and another that did not allow the Message application to upload photos to iCloud. Users can proceed with the update by going to the menu: settings, general then Software update.
