According to the New York Timesa Apple would be negotiating with news outlets and publishers in the United States with the aim of obtaining licensing agreements to use the content of these outlets in the development of generative artificial intelligence systems.

Sources familiar with the negotiations revealed to the American newspaper that Maçã would have proposed multi-year agreements worth a minimum of US$50 million to license gigantic files containing news articles.

Among the companies contacted would be Condé Nast (publisher of Vogue and The New Yorker), NBC News and IAC — which owns some outlets such as People and Better Homes & Gardens magazines, as well as the website The Daily Beast.

Still, the success of Apple’s efforts to obtain the licenses remains uncertain, as some publishers are reportedly expressing lukewarm responses to the approaches. Meanwhile, others would be “optimistic” about a possible partnership.

Recently, it is worth remembering, Apple revealed the Human Gaussian Splats (HUGS), creator of 3D avatars from short videos, and a new technique for running AI applications in the flash memory of devices like the iPhone.

Despite the giant’s reserved stance, rumors indicate the company’s growing interest in the AI market. Internally, there are indications of the company’s work in a chatbot, “Apple GPT”; the expectation is that it will be announced in 2024. In addition, good AI news is expected in Siri in iOS 18.
