With tvOS update 17.2, which should be available next week, Apple has significantly modified the TV application. And this new version therefore marks the death knell for two historic Apple TV applications: Films et TV Series.

With the current version of tvOS, the application Films (and its icon which displays “ Movies / iTunes “) is used to buy and watch movies (yes, that makes sense) and the application TV Series (and its icon “ TV shows / iTunes “) is its counterpart for the series. In the next version, the TV application will recover the purchasing and rental functions, and keep the reading functions (already present). As indicated by our colleagues from MacRumorsthe applications will not be deleted directly, but they are empty shells under tvOS 17.2: they display a message which refers to the redesigned TV application.

What was a rumor since October is therefore very true and we can also assume that the applications will be completely removed in future versions of tvOS. And to be clear, there are currently no differences in functionality: it is still possible to rent or buy films and series.
Finally, it should be noted that the change should also arrive on iOS and iPadOS: the iTunes Store application still allows you to buy and rent films and series, alongside the TV application. Under macOS, on the other hand, everything has been well separated for a few versions.
