New data from Counterpoint Research indicate that the Apple closed the second quarter of 2023 with a record global operating profit, which corresponds to 85% profit of the entire smartphone market. The company also posted record revenue, equivalent to 45% of everything collected by the sector in the last period.
These numbers, it’s worth noting, come amid a declining market. Still according to the research firm, the revenue of the sector fell 8% year-on-year comparison and 15% in the comparison between quarters. More specifically, revenue dropped “significantly below” $90 billion in the second quarter of 2023 — the lowest since 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Even so, Apple’s numbers are still impressive. To get an idea, Apple leads the operating profit numbers by a margin of 73% in relation to Samsung, which appears with a slice of just under 20%. When considered its share of global revenue, Apple beats its South Korean rival by a smaller but comfortable margin of 28%.
According to Counterpoint research director Jeff Fieldhack, Apple submissions have dropped 3% over the last year while the market as a whole has retreated 9% in the same period. Their shares of operating profit and global revenue, in turn, grew 3% e 4%, respectively. The company’s strongest line in the last period, it is worth noting, was the Pro models (iPhones 14 Pro/14 Pro Max).
Also according to Fieldhack, these timid numbers have to do mainly with seasonality, since the second quarter does not usually receive large launches and is “equidistant from the peak demand for the iPhone and the launch of new iPhones”. The premium sector is forecast to become increasingly important over time, which should trigger a more substantial recovery for the market in the second half of the year.
