Apple unveils ultra-high-performance chip ‘M1 Ultra’ and high-performance PC ‘Mac Studio’

Apple introduced these products at a ‘special event’ streamed online at Apple Park, its headquarters in Cupertino, California on the same day.

M1 Ultra is the latest and highest-level product of M1, a high-performance and high-efficiency system-on-chip (SoC, a technology-intensive semiconductor that implements a system with multiple functions on a single chip) for high-performance and high-efficiency laptops and PCs that Apple introduced and surprised the semiconductor and computer industries.

Apple, which had been independently designing chips for iPhones and iPads, unveiled the M1 in November 2020. It was rated as ‘innovative’.

M1 Ultra is made by joining two M1 Max chips, which were the top lineup of M1 products that Apple has unveiled so far, using Apple’s unique packaging architecture, Ultrafusion method. It is equipped with a 20-core CPU, 64-core graphics processing unit (GPU), and a 32-core neural engine, which is twice the size of the M1 Max, and up to 128GB of high-bandwidth, low-latency integrated memory.

It has 114 billion transistors, the most among PC chips ever released. Compared to the M1, it is seven times larger.

A typical chip connection is made through the main board, which leads to losses such as increased latency, reduced bandwidth, and increased power consumption.

Ultrafusion, which Apple applied instead, uses a silicon interposer that connects chips across more than 10,000 signals to secure 2.5 TB (terabytes) of low-latency interprocessor bandwidth per second.

This way, the two chips work as a single chip, and the software recognizes the M1 Ultra as a single chip, allowing you to take full advantage of its performance, Apple explained.

“The M1 Ultra is another game-changer for Apple Silicon (Apple’s semiconductor brand) and will shock the PC industry once again,” said Johnny Srouge, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware technology. It is a filling product and the most powerful and capable chip ever for a PC chip.”

As a result, Apple explains that it consumes less power than competing chips and provides powerful performance. When using the same power, it delivers 90% higher performance than the fastest 16-core PC chip, and uses 100 watts (W) less power to achieve the same performance as the maximum performance of a competing PC chip.

In addition, it exhibits faster performance than the best PC GPUs available today with 200 watts of power savings.

Apple also unveiled Mac Studio, a desktop PC equipped with this powerful chip. Apple introduced that it is a product that will make the studio that scientists, designers, sound engineers, and photography/video engineers dreamed of performing high-level simulations become a reality.

Mac Studio equipped with M1 Max or M1 Ultra chip is a small PC that is made of aluminum and looks like a square box with a length of 19.7 cm and a height of 9.5 cm, but its performance is powerful.

According to Apple, “Mac Studio allows users to do things that no other desktop can do, from rendering large-scale 3D environments to playing 18 ProRes video streams.”

In the case of Mac Studio with higher performance M1 Ultra, it is said that CPU performance is up to 3.8 times faster than the fastest iMac 27 with 10-core CPU and up to 90% faster than Mac Pro with 16-core Xeon processor.

In addition, the GPU performance is up to 4.5 times faster than the iMac 27 and up to 80 percent faster than the fastest Mac Pro, Apple said.

Connectivity with external devices has also been greatly improved. There are four Thunderbolt 4 ports, one 10Gb Ethernet port, two USB-A ports, one HDMI port, and a pro audio jack on the back, and two USB-C ports and an SD card slot on the front.

Apple also released a premium monitor ‘Studio Display’ that can be used in connection with Mac Studio. This 27-inch 5K retina display monitor is said to deliver vivid images with 14.7 million pixels and support for more than 1 billion colors.

It has a slim appearance with a thin border (bezel) and slim design on the front aluminum exterior, and the A13 Bionic chip is embedded in the monitor itself to support a center stage, 12 megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera.

It is equipped with a 6-speaker hi-fi system that combines two tweeters with four woofers, and has three studio-grade microphones for high-quality calls or voice recording.

According to Apple, “Mac Studio and Studio Display expand the possibilities for creative professionals to complete the studio of their dreams and take their creativity to new heights.”

The price of the Mac Studio starts at 2.69 million won, and the studio display starts at 2.09 million won.
