Apple Watch Owners Buy More Expensive iPhones, Survey Finds

by Alexandra Hartman Editor-in-Chief

It’s nothing new that you’re practically thanks to acquire one iPhone if you want to take advantage of all the features that a Apple Watch can offer. This need even occurs when making the initial settings of the watch, which require pairing with the smartphone.

The limitation is corroborated by data disclosed in a report by the Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), which revealed that virtually every Apple Watch owner is also an iPhone owner. But the survey went further and indicated which smartphone models are most purchased by those who have the Apple watch – and also by those who do not.

The data indicates that the Pro models of the iPhones 13 and 14 together represent 56% of the devices purchased in 2022 by Apple Watch owners – each with a 23% share. The cheapest model sold by Apple, the iPhone SE, represented only 3% of the share.

Among those who do not have a smartwatch, the most purchased models were the iPhones 13 and 13 mini, which represent 31% of the total. On the other hand, only 30% of customers who purchased Pro models — 15% for the iPhone 13 Pro and 15% for the iPhone 14 Pro — are not Apple smartwatch owners.

The data comes as no surprise given that, as the report itself points out, it makes sense that customers who invest in an Apple Watch would be more “likely” or “able” to invest in a premium iPhone. However, it is still interesting to see the statistical confirmation of this impression.

What regarding the entire ecosystem?

In early February, CIRP had already released statistical data regarding the Apple ecosystem as a whole. The survey investigated how many Apple devices each company’s customer owns, as well as which of them are more or less popular with that specific slice of consumers.

As expected, the iPhone is the most popular device among customers with an 88% share. But the iPad surprises by appearing right behind, with 73% share. Apple Watches followed closely (at 58%) while Macs took fourth place (at 50%).

The survey also showed that the majority of Apple customers own three (27%) or all four (30%) of the aforementioned devices, while only 19% own only one device. Of this last slice, 59% only own the iPhone, while 24% only have the iPad and 17%, the Mac.

It should be noted that the survey was carried out with people in the United States, whose reality regarding the consumption of Apple products differs considerably from what we have in Brazil. Around here, the number of users who own only one Apple product would possibly represent most of the slice.
