Apple would be considering using Baidu AI in iPhones in China

A new report from The Wall Street Journal corroborated recent rumors that the Apple would be intending to use resources from artificial intelligence from third parties on iPhones. According to the newspaper, Maçã would be in talks with Baidu to use the company’s AI in Chinaas an alternative to the platform that can be used globally.

The use of a different model in the country would be due to various restrictions regarding the use of foreign systems on Chinese soil. When we talk about artificial intelligence, more specifically, there is a requirement that these models be analyzed by the local regulatory body before being released to the public.

To date, popular platforms worldwide, such as ChatGPT (from OpenAI) and Gemini (from Google), have not yet been approved there. Therefore, Apple could prefer stability by adopting one of the more than 40 generative AI models already regulated in the country — which include Ernieand Baidu.

According to the report, Apple has been holding “exploratory” conversations with the latter. It is not known for sure whether Maçã is surveying other local companies besides Baidu, however, if the partnership is confirmed, the company will follow a path similar to that already adopted by Samsungwhich uses Gemini as its AI model globally, but adopts Ernie in China.

Experts interviewed by the newspaper believe that adopting a partner like Baidu could help Apple compete with rivals in China — as it would use a model with AI capabilities in the local language — at the same time that the company would save efforts to enter in accordance with the laws of the country.

Apple already operates under a different regime in China on some fronts. User files are stored directly on Chinese soil, from a cloud operated in partnership with a state partner, for example — which means the company complies with the determination that customer data remains in the country.

In any case, if you intend to launch this integration in iOS 18, Apple must race against time. This is because the future major version of the iPhone operating system should be announced at WWDC24 — which should take place in June, if Apple maintains its traditional schedule of events.
