DJ Koh, then chief executive of Samsung Electronics, later admitted to journalists that he had pushed the device out before it was genuinely ready. Now, Apple is preparing to enter that exact arena. Industry reports and analysts anticipate the arrival of the first folding iPhone, widely designated as the iPhone Ultra Fold, toward the end of December 2026. With a projected starting price of approximately $2,000, the device aims squarely at Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. Despite this luxury price point, market projections estimate that Apple could capture a substantial 22% share of the foldable phone market within its first twelve months on shelves, buoyed by deep consumer loyalty.
Engineering the iPhone Ultra Fold
Drawing aesthetic and structural cues from the lightweight iPhone Air, the iPhone Ultra Fold is expected to utilize a titanium-aluminum alloy frame to balance physical durability with a slim profile. Apple is reportedly eliminating the physical SIM tray entirely, driving the hardware deeper into an eSIM-only future. Physical buttons will shift to the left side of the device, while color configurations will remain tightly focused on dark blue and white.

The device will rely on a dual-screen configuration. A compact 5.5-inch outer screen will manage quick interactions, while a sprawling 7.8-inch inner foldable display will open up an immersive, iPad-mini-like viewing space. Apple is collaborating directly with Samsung Display to source screen components, integrating advanced adhesive and glass technologies specifically engineered to mitigate the visibility of the display crease.
Under-the-Hood Specs and Battery Architecture
Performance demands for a dual-screen device require top-tier silicon. The handset is expected to run on Apple’s upcoming A20 or A20 Pro chip, paired with a minimum of 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of onboard storage. Photography hardware will likely feature dual 48-megapixel rear cameras alongside dual 18-megapixel front shooters, with exploration into under-display camera configurations currently underway.
Powering these demanding specs requires a massive power source. Industry estimates place the battery capacity between 5,000 and 5,500 mAh, marking the largest energy storage ever packed into an iPhone chassis.
