Apple is updating its parental control framework with “Time Allowances” in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.
The Technical Shift in Metadata Enforcement
Starting in July 2026, the age rating questionnaire will trigger a mandatory re-classification for any app incorporating social features. Once flagged, the system automatically enforces a minimum age rating of 13+, unless the developer explicitly implements the Declared Age Range API to restrict those features for younger users.

Beyond the App Store: The Social Media Classification Trap
The definition of “Social Media” provided by Apple is broad enough to catch more than just traditional networking apps. It targets any software that facilitates the interaction with user-generated content (UGC) through discovery methods.
If you are a developer, your primary category in App Store Connect—whether “Games” or “Entertainment”—no longer shields you from the “Social Media” designation. If your app includes a social feed, the OS-level restrictions apply. The timeline is aggressive: by September 2026, submission of any new version or update, including notarization for alternative marketplaces, will be blocked unless this social media declaration is completed.
If a developer opts to disable social features for users under 13 using the Declared Age Range API, the app may avoid the “Social Media” classification for those specific users. However, for users 13 and older, the app will be categorized as Social Media regardless of its primary App Store category.
Ecosystem Bridging and the API War
Failure to accurately report social capabilities will lead to rejected builds.
The 30-Second Verdict
- The Deadline: September 2026 is the hard stop for all app updates.
- The Tech: Use the Declared Age Range API to bypass the 13+ social media tag for minors.
- The Mechanism: Social Media status is determined by behavior (UGC interaction), not by your App Store category.
The era of “social-adjacent” apps hiding in the Games category is officially over.
