Apple’s Self Service Repair program launches in the US

In the fall, Apple announced that it would enable repairs to be carried out by customers through the Self Service Repair program. The program is now starting with some iPhone models in the USA.

The Self Service Repair Program announced last year has now started in the USA. Apple is presenting detailed documentation and spare parts for all iPhone 12 and 13 models, as well as for the new iPhone SE. In addition, all the tools you need can be rented for a week or bought. These tools are the exact devices and jigs used in in-store repairs, according to Apple Store employees. Anyone hoping for an inexpensive repair of their iPhone will be at least partially disappointed.

Replacing an iPhone 12 screen costs $279 at the Apple Store. The Display Bundle at the Self Service Repair Store costs $268. If the old display is sent in for recycling, you get a discount, bringing the price down to $234. The tool kit rental price is $49.

The tool kit consists of two large cases with tools and machines.

When this is factored into the self-repair bill, the total price is even higher than what the Apple Store offers. Now you might think that the usual Apple surcharge is included here, but spare parts for displays are not much cheaper on the aftermarket either. iFixit, a supplier of replacement parts and repair guides, is offering an iPhone 12 display that it says is very close to the original for $244.

This comparison shows that Apple Store repair prices are not prohibitively expensive. The self-service repair program is probably rather unattractive for a single repair. However, if several parts or several iPhones are to be repaired at once, it could still be worthwhile. Even if many would have liked lower prices for the spare parts, the exclusive availability of original spare parts and tools is a positive innovation for private individuals and independent repair shops.
