Slow Adoption Raises Concerns Across the VR Headset Industry

Apple’s highly anticipated Vision Pro headset has reportedly sold fewer than 500,000 units since its debut in February, according to insider information. The lackluster sales figures are coupled with concerns that many users are not engaging with the headset as frequently as Apple had projected.

“Since the Vision Pro went on sale in February, I’m told that the company has sold fewer than half a million units. And a large number of Vision Pro buyers (those who haven’t returned it) aren’t using the product as much as Apple anticipated, according to internal data gathered by the company,” said Mark Gurman, a well-known technology analyst who specializes in Apple reporting .

This troubling trend extends beyond Apple, impacting other major players in the virtual reality (VR) market, such as Meta.

“Of course, that second problem isn’t unique to Apple. Meta and other headset makers also have struggled to keep customers hooked on their products. But it makes it that much harder to get consumers to upgrade someday,” Gurman added, highlighting a wider challenge facing the industry.

Price and Use Cases: Key Factors Behind the Slump?

The Vision Pro’s hefty price tag of $3,500 is seen as a significant barrier to entry for many potential buyers. Adding to this hurdle is the perceived lack of compelling use cases for the technology, beyond gaming and entertainment.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggests that these factors, rather than just the high cost, are contributing to the slow adoption rate.

As a solution, Apple seems to be pursuing a more accessible price point with a lower-cost Vision Pro model in development. However, its release has been delayed until 2027 or later.
