Appointment Saga of Ares’ Board President Ends: Meet Jean-Paul Lambert

Clap of (almost) end in the saga of the appointment of the president of the board of directors (CA) of Ares. The Academy of Research and Higher Education is the dome of the sector. Its board of directors has been without a leader since the resignation of Jean-Pierre Hansen. It was November 2020.

We well remember the Hervé Hasquin episode, a month later. The MR then tried to impose the former minister and rector of the ULB, whose candidacy had been sharply rejected by the CA.

In the meantime, the rules have changed. The opinion of the board of directors is no longer binding but only advisory.

The Minister of Higher Education, Françoise Bertieaux (MR), proposed the candidacy of Jean-Paul Lambert. The CA has just given it a positive opinion. It remains for the government of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation to definitively endorse the former rector of Saint-Louis in his new position.

Who is Jean-Paul Lambert? After a civil engineering degree, the student continued training as an economist up to a doctorate, presented at the Core research institute at UCL (which was not yet called UCLouvain at the time) . He then began his academic career as a professor of economics, first abroad then in Saint-Louis from 1986. He successively held the positions of Dean (3 years), Vice-Rector (10 years) and Rector (10 years).

“In parallel with this evolution in my responsibilities as director of a university,” he explains on his Linkedin profile, “my research themes have gradually evolved from macroeconomics (my initial field) to the economy and policies of education, with a particular interest in the comparative international analysis of education systems (covering both compulsory and higher education). In addition to publications in scientific journals, I intervene on these questions in public debate.”

At 71, he soon plunged back into his favorite subjects.

“His academic background and his mastery of the future challenges for our higher education make Professor Jean-Paul Lambert an ideal candidate whose commitment will be full and complete,” commented Minister Bertieaux who placed the item on the agenda. of Government Day this Thursday.
