In order to ensure the well-being of the Jaguars that live in the facilities of the Zoochilpan Zoo in Chilpancingo, the park management together with veterinarians launched the “Appropriate Management in Preventive Medicine” program, specifically for the jaguars in the first instance.
The program’s objective is the clinical assessment of jaguars to prevent anatomophysiological alterations and thereby ensure the well-being of the species.
The above is part of the public policies on the environment promoted by the governor, Evelyn Salgado Pineda, through the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, headed by Ángel Almazán Juárez, causing the adequate preservation of the species that inhabit it. at the Zoochilpan Zoo, which is why the monitoring program for the common jaguar specimens maintained by the park began.
The general director of the Zoochilpan Zoo, Fernando Domínguez Bernaldez, pointed out the importance of maintaining, through the Medical Unit he directs, an adequate management program in preventive medicine that allows for the timely determination of any clinical condition in the specimens, “We are starting the activities assessment first with the felines, in this case gradually with the six jaguars that we have, I want to highlight that to carry out this practice the protocols implemented for handling wildlife are strictly followed.”
Therefore, the head of Zoochilpan also mentioned about the complete integration for this management with jaguars, of the Animal Medicine and Welfare Area of the Zoo, which is made up of the staff of Veterinary Doctors, Zootechnicians and Biologists, all of them with experience in the branch of medicine in wildlife.
The park’s veterinary team carried out a general physical examination, blood sample, oral cavity examination, gland cleaning and skin scraping for diagnosis with the first jaguar, all with the aim of clinically assessing, as well as timely diagnosing any pathology.
These medical practices that are being carried out on the felines allow us to arrive at an acceptable health diagnosis for the conditions of the species under professional care, asserting that these jaguars are mostly geriatric animals, so follow-up must be given. constant prevention, as is done with all the animal species that inhabit the Green Lung of Chilpancingo for their preservation.
