Are you on Windows 10? Microsoft wants to force you to upgrade to Windows 11

PCs running Windows 10 and with a compatible configuration have received an update in which Microsoft strongly encourages them to upgrade their machine to Windows 11.

Microsoft wants at all costs that you update your computer with Windows 11. The latest example is an update offered to users under Windows 10. They have indeed been offered a new update, stamped KB5020683 which, when applied, offers a new OOBE (Out of Box Experience) screen.

This is a series of screens displayed when the PC starts and which generally requires you to perform certain tasks such as accepting license agreements, connecting your PC to the Internet, or even connecting your Microsoft ID.

An update to get an upgrade

But this time the OOBE screen is a bit special. Microsoft has indeed chosen to display several pages there to present Windows 11 and invite you to download and install (free of charge) the new version of its operating system.

“On November 30, 2022, an out-of-band update was released to improve the Out of box (OOBE) experience for Windows 10, version 2004, 20H2, 21H1, 21H2, and 22H2. It offers eligible devices the option to upgrade to Windows 11 as part of the OOBE process. This update will only be available when an OOBE update is installed. » explains Microsoft on the support page of its update.

For this update to be offered to you, your machine must be running the Home or Professional versions of Windows 10 version 2004, 20H2, 21H1, 21H2 or 22H2. Above all, you must have a computer eligible for the installation of Windows 11. In other words, your PC under Windows 10 must have a configuration that meets the criteria required by Microsoft for the installation of Windows 11. If your machine does not does not ship an 8 processore generation at least, does not have a TPM 2.0 module and is not compatible with Secure Boot, you should avoid it.

After installing the KB5020683 update, upon restarting the PC, the OOBE screens will appear and offer you to download on the Windows 11 field to upgrade your computer.

Upgrade to Windows 11 before support for older versions of Windows ends

Why on earth does Microsoft absolutely want you to upgrade to Windows 11? Quite simply to prepare for the upcoming end of support for Windows 10. The operating system, released in 2015, will officially no longer be supported from October 14, 2025. This means that Microsoft will only offer no more updates for the operating system. But before that, another version of Windows will bow out. On January 10, Microsoft will officially stop supporting Windows 8/8.1..

If you are one of the last users still using this operating system, you only have a few weeks left to upgrade your PC to Windows 10, or to invest in a new machine with the sufficient configuration for the installation of Windows 11.
