The Guatemalan Ministry of Foreign Affairs detailed that the presidents of Mexico and Chile, Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Gabriel Boric, respectively, will attend Arévalo de León’s investiture.

Presidents Rodrigo Chaves, of Costa Rica, will also be in Guatemala; Xiomara Castro, from Honduras; Gustavo Petro, from Colombia; Santiago Peña, from Paraguay; Daniel Noboa, from Ecuador and Laurentino Cortizo, from Panama, as well as the Prime Minister of Belize, Juan Antonio Briceño, and the Prime Minister of Aruba, Evelyn Weber-Croes.

Likewise, the foreign ministers of Taiwan, the Dominican Republic, Peru and Portugal will also arrive at the investiture ceremony, the same source specified.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also confirmed the presence at the change of command ceremony of Luis Almagro, secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS).

Almagro has closely followed and monitored the transition process after the repeated attempts by the Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office) of Guatemala to reverse the electoral victory of Arévalo de León.

The investiture of the new president will take place at 2:00 p.m. local time (20:00 GMT) and will mark the beginning of the Government of Arévalo de León, winner of the elections in 2023 led by the progressive party Movimiento Semilla.

Arévalo de León warned on September 1 that the attorney general and head of the Public Ministry, Consuelo Porras, was carrying out a “coup d’état” against him to prevent him from taking office.

In an interview with EFE this week, the Guatemalan president-elect assured that the promoters of the “coup d’état” against him are “desperate” a few days before his inauguration.

The 65-year-old academic comes to power with an anti-corruption speech to replace the current president, Alejandro Giammattei, who has one of the lowest approval levels on the continent, according to various surveys.
