Argentina officially withdraws from the BRICS expansion plan. The new far-right President Javier Milei has fulfilled his campaign promise and reversed the country’s decision to join the BRICS.

(Deutsche Welle Chinese website) Friday (December 29) local timeArgentinian President MilaiA letter has been sent to the leaders of the BRICS countries, formally deciding to withdraw from joining this alliance of the world’s major emerging economies.
Milai said now was not the “right time” for Argentina to become a full member.

The BRICS countries Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa are also members of the G20.It announced in August this year that it would admit six new members

Membership of Argentina, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates was originally scheduled to come into effect on January 1, 2024.

The BRICS countries currently account for about 40% of the world’s population and more than a quarter of the world’s GDP. As many as 14 countries, mainly from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, have expressed interest in joining the organization.

Millay overturns his predecessor’s decision

The letter to BRICS leaders was signed by Milley and published by multiple media outlets. The letter stated that Argentina’s membership of the BRICS group “is currently considered inappropriate”, but Milai expressed his willingness to hold separate meetings with the leaders of the five BRICS countries.
Milley, a political outsider and radical liberal, defeated Argentina’s traditional parties in the presidential election. During the election campaign, he vowed not to join the BRICS group.

He said in the letter that its foreign policy “is different from the previous administration in many aspects. In this sense, some decisions made by the previous administration will be revisited.”

Milley’s predecessor, former center-left President Alberto Fernandez, had favored Argentina’s membership of the BRICS grouping and saw it as an opportunity to open up new markets.

Argentina ‘will not ally with communists’

During the campaign, Milley said “our geopolitical orientation is to align with the United States and Israel. We will not ally with the Communists.”

Milley disparaged “communist” countries throughout his presidential campaignand announced that despite China’s increasing investment in South America, he would not maintain diplomatic relations with these countries.

Although he has vowed to sever ties with major trading partners China and Brazil, he has adopted a softer stance and tone since taking office.

Millais defines himself as an “anarcho-capitalist” and has implemented a series of measures to deregulate the economy, which has been characterized by state interventionism in recent decades.

Milley laid out his economic plans shortly after taking office, claiming there was “no alternative to austerity and shock therapy.”

He insists his predecessor left the country’s finances empty and on a path to hyperinflation.
