Four residents, including two young children, lost their lives in a devastating head-on collision on State Route 260 in eastern Arizona on Labor Day, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The Tragedy Along State Route 260
The fatal collision occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, at mile marker 300, just west of Heber-Overgaard, as reported by AZFamily. Two vehicles collided head-on along the stretch of highway, causing catastrophic damage. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, four individuals traveling in a black vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities identified the victims as 26-year-old Giovanni Uballe Huerta of Laveen, 26-year-old Kiah Jae Begaye of Mesa, a 4-year-old boy from Mesa, and a 2-year-old girl from Mesa.
Suspect Arrested and Charges Filed
Investigators quickly turned their focus to the driver of the second vehicle involved—a pickup truck carrying passengers from New Mexico. Law enforcement identified the driver as 21-year-old Jesse David Lovato of Los Lunas, New Mexico.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, Lovato was booked into the Navajo County Detention Center in Holbrook following the incident. He currently faces four counts of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault. Investigators have not yet released a specific, underlying cause for the crash, and the incident remains under active investigation by state authorities.
Injuries and Emergency Response Impact
The violent impact also injured two other occupants riding in the pickup truck with Lovato. State officials confirmed that a 21-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy, both from New Mexico, survived the crash and were transported back to the Valley for medical treatment.
Emergency responders from the Forest Lakes Fire District rushed to the scene to manage the wreckage and triage the injured. The collision forced the complete closure of State Route 260 in both directions for several hours as accident reconstruction teams mapped the scene and cleared the debris. Transportation officials reported that both directions of the highway successfully reopened late Monday evening.
