A semi-truck carrying roughly 40,000 pounds of cheese crashed off US-60 outside Whiteriver, Arizona, plunging down a steep ravine and scattering its dairy cargo across the landscape, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Highway Patrol state troopers responded to a report of a truck and trailer that had veered into a roadside ditch on August 16. Investigators determined the semi failed to negotiate a left-hand curve, continuing straight and leaving the roadway to the right. The vehicle clipped a guardrail, traversed a pile of large boulders, and broke through a right-of-way fence before tumbling face down into a steep drop-off.

The driver told investigators that he swerved to avoid an animal on the highway. However, state troopers noted that driver fatigue may have also contributed to the crash. The Arizona Department of Public Safety emphasized the dangers of operating heavy vehicles on challenging terrain, writing in a public statement that “drowsy driving equals impaired driving.” Troopers added, “Winding mountain roads are no joke. No matter what you drive, slow down, stay alert and make sure you’re good to drive.” It remains unclear whether the driver sustained any injuries during the plunge.
