Investigation Continues After Suspect Released in Death of Ann Widdecombe
British police have released a 26-year-old man who was arrested on Friday in connection with the death of Ann Widdecombe, a former Member of Parliament and television personality. Authorities confirmed on Saturday that the man is no longer part of the investigation.
Widdecombe, 78, was found dead with “serious injuries” at her home in Haytor, Devon, on Thursday at 11:40 a.m. Devon and Cornwall Police are working on the assumption that she was attacked at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman stated that while the murder inquiry is in its early stages, it is moving at a significant pace. “Our priority remains identifying those responsible and ensuring that all available evidence is thoroughly examined,” Longman said. The police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward via a major incident public portal or through the charity Crimestoppers.
Timeline of Disappearance
Concerns for Widdecombe’s safety were raised after she failed to appear for a remote television interview scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday. According to reports, Widdecombe had spoken to a researcher from a Channel 5 program at 12:19 p.m. When the staff member attempted to contact her again at 12:48 p.m. to join a Zoom link, they received no response.
Channel 5 executives eventually contacted her agent after repeated attempts to reach her went unanswered. Her absence from the scheduled appearance was described as uncharacteristic. Police believe she may have been dead at her home for nearly 24 hours before her body was discovered by the ambulance service the following day.
Political Context and Security Concerns

Widdecombe served as a Conservative MP for the Kent constituency of Maidstone from 1987 to 2010. She later served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2019 to 2020 and became a spokesperson for the Reform UK party.
Despite her high-profile status, Devon and Cornwall Police have stated there is no information to suggest the killing was an act of terrorism or politically motivated. Assistant Chief Constable Longman explicitly urged the public to avoid speculation regarding the motive.
Nevertheless, the death has prompted renewed debate regarding the safety of public figures in the United Kingdom. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage expressed concern that public life has become increasingly dangerous, though he acknowledged that the motive in this specific case remains unknown.
The incident has drawn parallels to the murders of other British politicians over the last decade, including Labour MP Jo Cox in 2016 and Conservative MP David Amess in 2021. Experts noted that while the UK is generally an unviolent society, reported crimes against MPs have more than doubled since the 2019 general election, contributing to a climate of heightened anxiety among those in public office.
A Career in Politics and Entertainment
Widdecombe was well-known for her socially conservative views, including her opposition to abortion and LGBTQ rights. Beyond her parliamentary career, she became a familiar presence on mainstream entertainment television.
Her reality show appearances included:
* *Strictly Come Dancing*
* *Celebrity Big Brother*
* *Celebrity Fit Club*
* *Have I Got News for You*
* *Celebrity Antiques Road Trip*
* *Cleverdicks*
In 2007, she appeared as herself in an episode of *Doctor Who*. Her time on *Strictly Come Dancing* in 2010, where she partnered with Anton Du Beke, earned her widespread public popularity. Du Beke paid tribute to her on social media, describing her as a supportive friend who was “fun, upbeat and positive.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the news “really shocking,” while Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch stated she was “stunned” by the incident. As investigations continue, a large police presence remains at the scene in Dartmoor, and the family has requested that their privacy be respected.
