The so-called ‘Galán de Tinder’ was arrested by the Brazilian Police after spending nine months escaping from Justice. The man used social platforms to attract his victims, whom he seduced to ask for large sums of money, and disappeared.

Renan Augusto Gomes was arrested in the middle of a police chase on film, on the avenue Raimundo Pereira Magalhaes, in the region of Pirituba, located in the northern area of ​​Sao Paulo.

This police operation was carried out jointly between the Specialized Delegation for Criminal Investigations of Sao Bernardo do Campo and the Public Ministry of Sao Paulo.

The alleged scammer was being investigated by the Justice since last year. The arrest warrant was issued in December 2021, but the now apprehended had remained a fugitive until September of this year, G1 collects.

What was the profile of the ‘Galan de Tinder’?

Gomes presented himself on dating applications as an engineer looking for a serious relationship, according to the promoter of Justice acting in the case, Érika Pucci da Costa Leal.

The now detainee had several profiles on dating networks such as Tinder, Inner, Happn, Lovoo. There he was called Augusto Keller.

“I am single a year ago, I entered this application to look for a serious relationship. If you are looking for sex or fun, please leave my profile”, he had written on one of the platforms, according to Tribuna Online.

Gomes was shown as an affectionate, attentive man, with issues of family absence and a heavy workload, which he used as an excuse to prevent them from knowing his social circle.

The story he told was that his parents, of German origin, had died in a car accident in the São Paulo city of Araçatuba.

Meanwhile, he was gaining the trust of his victims, he had personal meetings with them, he visited them in their homes, he met their relatives and he was paying the land so that they would deliver goods or valuables.

How did he wrap his victims?

Gomes let the relationship progress to start borrowing money, claiming that he had problems with the treasury and the banks. After achieving his purpose, he disappeared and left his alleged partners with debts. It is estimated that seven women were victims of his scams.

Among his biggest financial coups are two loans: one for 200,000 reais ($37,000) and another for 100,000 reais ($18,000) to a woman he convinced to open a store in partnership for which they would earn high profits.

How did they find him?

The Sao Bernardo de Campo Police, who monitored his routines, realized that he slept in different places every day. In addition, she realized that she was constantly changing phone numbers and that she had several profiles under false names on social networks.

To achieve his capture, the agents created a fictitious profile in the same applications that he used to find the place where he lived.

On the morning of September 22, he was approached by the agents while he was leaving a parking lot with his car. Noticing him, he accelerated and began the police chase that was recorded on video.

In the middle of his escape he drove the wrong way, lost control of the vehicle, collided with other cars and crashed into a tree. After the accident he tried to escape because he stated that he was not going to turn himself in to the authorities.

The testimony of a woman

One of those affected told G1 that she met Gomes in Rio Preto, in Sao Paulo, ten years ago. She stated that when they went out to eat in expensive places he would not allow her to pay the bill.

He recalled that on one occasion the man, with whom he had established a relationship, told him that he had lost his wallet and that he needed 300 reais (55 dollars) to travel to the headquarters of his bank to resolve the matter.

After that first disbursement, Gomes asked him for 800 reais more (145 dollars), to buy him a cell phone at a cost well below the market price. He then disappeared for a while without having made the delivery of the device or the reimbursement of the money.

The victim looked for more information about the possible scammer and found the contact of a brother. When calling him, she asked him if his relative was an engineer, to which the voice on the other end of the phone replied: “He was just an engineer at the dog house.”

As Gomes knew that the woman was still trying to find him, he threatened her several times. On one occasion she told him that she was going to see “if she had a strong chest”, because he was going to look for her, and on another she asked him if her son was going to school that day, because someone had told him. was going to take
