▲ Police arresting a drunk driver in the parking lot of an officetel in Ansan City around 11:30 p.m. on the 19th. This driver, while intoxicated to the point of having his license revoked, drove an additional 14 km without complying with the police’s request to stop. The police took strong action and arrested the driver, including firing live ammunition at a drunk driver who ignored a request to stop and rammed a patrol car and tried to flee.

This police firing of live ammunition was the first case of firearms being used after the police declared special security activities in response to a series of violent crimes such as weapon violence, and they actively used firearms during the arrest process.

Ansan Danwon Police Station in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 20th that it plans to apply for an arrest warrant for Mr. A (28) on charges of obstruction of special official duties and violation of the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving).

Mr. A is accused of driving his SUV while drunk with a blood alcohol level that would lead to license cancellation on the coastal road in Seonggok-dong, Danwon-gu, Ansan-si at 11:18 p.m. on the 19th.

The driver of another vehicle who was following Mr. A’s vehicle at the time said, “The vehicle in front is staggering and running. He reported it to 112, saying, “I suspect he was drinking.”

The police immediately arrived and caught up with Mr. A’s vehicle and asked him to stop, but Mr. A refused to comply and drove about 14km into the parking lot of an officetel in Ansan City.

Mr. A drove the vehicle up to the 4th floor above ground, hit and pushed the patrol car that blocked his path several times, and then fled to the 2nd floor.

The police used a patrol car on the second floor to block the escape route, but Mr. A continued to try to escape by moving the vehicle back and forth.

The police repeatedly asked Mr. A to get out of the vehicle, but when Mr. A did not listen, they eventually fired two blank bullets and six live bullets near the tires.

One pistol carried by a police officer is loaded with one blank bullet and three live bullets, and it is known that the two police officers each used a pistol and used up all the bullets.

The police then used a triple baton to break the car window, fired one Taser gun at Mr. A, subdued him, and arrested him as a red-light criminal.

A total of 18 vehicles, including 16 parked residents’ vehicles and 2 patrol cars, were damaged due to Mr. A’s vehicle rampage that lasted for approximately 6 minutes.

As a result of a breathalyzer test conducted on the arrested Mr. A, his blood alcohol content reached the level of license revocation.

Person A was found to have stated to the police, “I was drunk and couldn’t remember.”

As a result of the investigation, it was confirmed that Mr. A committed the crime by getting behind the wheel after having the first or second dinner with his co-workers in Gojan-dong, Danwon-gu, Ansan-si.

It is reported that Mr. A has a history of receiving criminal punishment due to drinking.

Park Ki-seong, head of the 112 management team at the Gyeonggi Southern Police Agency, said, “It was a legitimate exercise of public power in a crime situation using a dangerous object such as a vehicle,” and added, “It is judged that appropriate measures were taken in accordance with the guidelines to strictly use police equipment.”
