The game got off to the worst possible start for Arsenal. Aaron Ramsdale made a fatal mistake in the 1st minute. The minutes that followed were no better. Although Arteta’s team tried to attack, they lacked efficiency, which was perfectly used by the rivals. Already in the 14th minute, Theo Walcott, a longtime Arsenal player, unexpectedly increased the lead to 2:0. The scorer of the first goal sent a perfect pass to the feet of the Englishman, who fired a shot from outside the penalty area straight into the bottom left corner of the goal. This time Ramsdale didn’t stand much of a chance.
The two-miss lead did not break Arsenal, who started to make up for the losses. The contact goal in the 20th minute was scored by Gabriel Martinelli. The Brazilian ran into the free field thanks to a perfect pass from Bukayo Saki and fired. Gavin Bazunu was unable to save the shot and a moment later took the ball out of the net.
However, Arsenal did not follow the blow, and Southampton woke up again, who fired several dangerous shots. In the 41st minute, fans’ hearts trembled when Jan Bednarek fell on the pitch. It looked like a head injury. The Polish defender needed medical attention, and after leaving the sideline, the medical staff asked for a substitution. Bednarek could not accept the decision and wanted to play, but eventually left the field for good.

In the second half, Arsenal lacked precision again. Although they had much more possession of the ball, they were unable to get a shot on target. Their rival acted differently and in the 66th minute he caused another sensation. Duje Caleta-Car reached the pass from the corner and headed the ball into the goal.
Southampton seemed to be in control until the 89th minute. Then the contact goal was scored by Martin Odegaard. The Norwegian took the ball just outside the penalty area and hit the goal hard. The ball flew close to the left post and the keeper could only spread his hands helplessly. In turn, in the 90th minute, Bukayo Saka put the ball in the net. Thus, he led to a draw and saved a point.
The draw kept Arsenal top of the table, but that could change soon. They are only five points clear of Manchester City, who in turn have two games to catch up on. And most importantly, on April 26, there will be a direct clash between Manchester and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. Southampton, on the other hand, remained in last, 20th place.
