Arson Attack at Lycée Maistriau: Unoccupied Buildings Catch Fire in Jurbise

The fire broke out this morning in the old buildings of the Lycée Maistriau. They had been unoccupied for about ten years and had belonged to the commune of Jurbise for a year. Authorities believe it was an arson attack.

The alert was given around 10 a.m. Smoke was visible from a great distance. The emergency services arrived in large numbers to extinguish the flames which ravaged the buildings. “We bought the whole plot about a year ago“, explains the mayor of Jurbise Jacqueline Galant. “The prefabricated buildings had to be destroyed, because this is where the future Cité administrative and the sports center will be built.

The premises have not been visited by a forensic expert, but the videos of nearby surveillance cameras have been analyzed. “They do not reveal any suspicious movement around the building. We don’t see anyone, neither entering nor leaving”specifies Eric Joly, Deputy Public Prosecutor in Mons.

The mayor of Jurbise does not believe in the thesis of an accidental disaster. “There has been no more gas, no more electricity for a long time. It has rained a lot the last few days. Difficult to explain that the fire took spontaneously! I find it sad because the fire could have spread to other homes, and had much heavier consequences.

Firefighters did not evacuate the area. Everything is now back in order.
